Overview:
Managing workforce mobility is a critical part of the Human Resources function. This course focuses on the role cost of living plays in planning for workforce relocations. Topics will include an overview of the corporate function, current trends, benchmarking, analysis, and case studies. The underpinnings of cost of living/cost of labor analysis and modeling and how to determine credible, defensible and robust data will be discussed. Contrasts of cost of living to cost of labor will be drawn to highlight the unique role each can play in the planning function. Current economic conditions and trends will be discussed as organizations pass through a unique set of forces at play on the planning and implantation of employee relocations.
Syllabus
Learning Objectives:
- Identify general principles that define mobility program policies and practices

- Analyze relocation allowances based on cost of living variations by city, state/province, or region

- Explain current state of housing markets, trends in relocation real estate practices/policy and impact on workforce mobility

- Contrast the roles of cost of living and cost of labor in the design and implementation of relocation plans

- Analyze financial and economic factors impacting shifts in cost of living and cost of labor differentials
Presenters:
Christopher Chasteen, PhD, CCP
Chris is the Research Director for ERI Economic Research Institute. He has over 20 years of experience in research design, data analyses, and statistical programming. Chris spent the last 8 years with ERI researching geographic differentials in pay as the Product Manager for the Geographic Assessor. Other research interests have included international executive compensation and nonprofit organization executive compensation. Knowledgeable in multiple aspects of compensation, Dr. Chasteen is a Certified Compensation Professional with WorldatWork. Chris earned his PhD in Quantitative Psychology from the University of Oklahoma.
Marillyn Tefft, Economist
Marillyn is a Senior Researcher and Product Manager for ERI Economic Research Institute. She has more than 25 years of experience in data analysis, model building, forecasting, and survey design. Her experience includes analyzing and solving technical problems, designing and performing statistical analysis, and conducting research in legal, private, and government environments. Prior to joining ERI, Marillyn served as the Vice President of TKM, Inc., an economic and management consulting firm. Marillyn served on the Economics faculty at Trinity College in Hartford, CT. She is a member of the American Economic Association, the American Statistical Association, and the National Association of Business Economists. Ms. Tefft holds a Bachelor's Degree in Economics and a Master of Science in Economics and Finance from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Marillyn completed all coursework toward a Ph.D. in Economics at George Mason University.
